How far is Heathrow from Godalming?

Godalming sits roughly 25 to 30 miles from Heathrow, depending on which terminal you need — Terminal 5 is the nearest side of the airport, and the central terminals a little further round. With clear roads, the drive is usually somewhere around 40 to 50 minutes.

That's an approximation rather than a promise. The A3 and the M25 are both busy roads, and the same journey can take half an hour longer at the wrong time of day. We plan every airport run with a sensible buffer built in, rather than betting on a clear road.

The route we take

Almost every Heathrow run from Godalming starts the same way: north on the A3 towards Guildford, then on up to the M25 at junction 10 — the Wisley interchange, where the A3 meets the motorway — and clockwise round to the Heathrow junctions.

National Highways spent several years rebuilding junction 10, adding a larger roundabout and free-flow left turns at the corners. The main parts of that are now open, though the area has seen a great deal of disruption and it still pays to keep an eye on it. If the A3 or the M25 is genuinely blocked, our drivers know the local alternatives — that comes from driving these roads every day, not from following a satnav blindly.

Which terminal? It changes the last few miles

• Terminal 5 — signed from the M25 at junction 14, or the M4 at junction 4b. It's the closest part of the airport to us.
• Terminals 2 and 3 — the central terminal area in the middle of the airport, reached from the M4 at junction 4 or the M25 at junction 15.
• Terminal 4 — M25 junction 14, then the A3113 (Airport Way) and the Southern Perimeter Road, over on the south side.

T4 and T5 sit on opposite sides of Heathrow, so a wrong guess at the airport can cost you twenty minutes you hadn't planned for. Heathrow also charges its own drop-off fee for vehicles entering the terminal forecourts (£7 at the time of writing — worth checking heathrow.com for the current figure).

Traffic: an early start is a different journey

The two reliable pressure points on this route are Guildford and the M25 itself. Northbound on the A3 on a weekday morning, traffic around the A31 merge at Guildford tails back — on bad mornings, back towards Milford. And junction 10 at Wisley carries over 300,000 vehicles a day; National Highways describes it as the busiest section of the M25.

A 4am airport run is a completely different journey from a 7:30am one. Early starts are usually clear and quick. Leave between roughly seven and nine on a weekday and you're in the thick of it, and late afternoon is the other one to watch. That's why we ask what time your flight is, rather than only what time you'd like collecting.

Working out when to leave

We can't tell you when your airline wants you there — but we can help you work backwards.

Heathrow's own advice is to get to the airport three hours before an international flight, or two hours if you're flying domestically or to Europe. Your airline will have its own check-in and bag-drop deadlines on top of that, and those are usually the real cut-off, so check them first.

Then allow for the drive — about an hour from Godalming is a sensible working figure at a quiet time, more in rush hour — plus a margin on top. Luggage, early starts, returns and the fare
